Peru Guide: Daytrip to the desert oasis Huacachina

The city Huacachina is a little oasis in the desert of Peru and one of the driest spots in the world. It seems like one of the most instagramable spots in the world and you really get an unique view on the city if you walk up the dunes. In the central of Huacachina you find a beautiful lagune surrounded by palm trees, in which even some people were swimming. Backpackers love Huacachina, so it became a pretty touristic spot in the last years. The little city is definitely worth a visit, but I would recommend you to only stay for a few hours, because the place is tiny and there are not so many things to do.

What To Do In Huacachina

Sand Buggy Tours

One of the most adventurous things you can do in Huacachina is booking a sand buggy tour. If you are an adrenaline fan and don´t get dizzy too quickly you will have the best time ever. But I also have to say that I heard some pretty scary stories as well. So you should be careful that you are choosing a good company, cause sometimes the buggies go too fast, turn around and the fun can turn into a dangerous situation quickly. There have been some serious accidents, so don´t go for the cheapest option. The buggy tours take about an hour and cost around 10 €

Sand Boarding

A good alternative is the sand boarding, which sometimes is even included in the sand buggy tours. I did sand boarding in New Zealand ones and it was lots of fun, so I can really recommend it. Some of my friends tried it at Huacachina and they enjoyed it a lot. Have in mind that during the midday the sand heats up, so I recommend you to go either early or late around 5 – 7 pm, so that you can enjoy the sand boarding fully and don´t get annoyed by the hot sand.
There are different tours you can choose from. The cheapest one start around 8 € while some other bring you up to four different locations and cost around 45 € per person.

Exploring the Dunes

Last but not least you can just walk up the dunes yourself, which takes around 10 to 20 minutes depending on which of the dunes you choose. The higher you go the better the view you get. Sunglasses and sunscreen are a total must as it gets really warm in the desert. I also recommend you to wear shoes that are closed completely, to prevent you from burning your feet. Best time is around sunset as it´s not so warm anymore and you will get an amazing view.

Paddle Boats or Swimming

If you are looking for something more calmer you could also rent one of the paddle boats. It looks so romantic to paddle around the oasis and there have been some different companies all around the lake. You could also swim in the lake if you want to. Some people even say that the lake has healing powers.

Party all night long

I heard that the parties in Huacachina are amazing and basically every Hostel has their own little pool party. We just stayed in Huacachina for a few hours, before we got back to Paracas, so I can´t tell you more about that.

  5. Sand boarding sounds like so much fun. I’ve seen people doing this at the coral pink sand dunes state park in southern Utah and really need to give it a try. I also really liked your buggy idea, the price you mentioned is really affordable!
